Sharing your faith and connecting with others through the Internet can such be a powerful way to make a difference in the world. But building a blog or website can definitely feel intimidating if you haven’t done it before.

It’s been about 7 years since I first purchased this domain – abbyflynn.com. I would definitely say the first year was a lot of fumbling around, learning exploring and figuring things out.

But today, 7 years later, being a faith blogger who also shares about business, motherhood and creativity has become my #1 favorite pastime.

If you’d like to get started with your own blog, here are the 4 most important steps you’ll want to take!

Are you looking to start your own lifestyle blog? I highly recommend taking the Perfecting Blogging course from By Sophia Lee. I learned so much and it has helped me to grow my blog quickly more than anything else!

4 Steps to Start Your Christian Lifestyle Blog

1. Define your purpose and your audience.

Before you start writing your Christian lifestyle blog, it’s so important to decide on the purpose for your blog and who you want your audience to be.

Be honest with yourself about why you want to start this faith based blog and who you want to reach with your message.

Purpose: Are you hoping to inspire others with your personal faith journey? Do you want to provide practical tips for living a Christian lifestyle? Or do you simply want to inspire others with encouraging content?

Audience: Next ask yourself WHO your blog is for. Is it only for family and friends to read? Are you hoping to reach other Christian women? Or is your blog on faith all about introducing Christianity to those who don’t believe?

Once you have a clear understanding of your purpose and audience, it will be a whole lot easier to create content that resonates with your readers.

2. Choose a blogging platform and domain name.

Okay, you’ve decided on your purpose and your audience. Now it’s time to choose a blogging platform and domain name!

Find the right blogging platform for you.

There are so many blogging platforms available today, but I personally think WordPress is one of the most popular and user-friendly options. (My site has been on it for 7 years and I have no plans to change!)

You can choose between a free WordPress.com account or a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

But if you want a domain like abbyflynn.com that gives you full flexibility to change, update and use your website however you’d like, I highly recommend the self-hosted WordPress.org option.

A self hosted website gives you the option to grow your site over the time, and it’s a must if you want to use your website to make money at any point.

Down the road, it gives you the option to do things like add a store, a membership area, use affiliate links, and so much more.

If you’d like to explore other easy to use website platforms, you can also look into Squarespace or Wix!

Choose a domain name that reflects your blog’s purpose and message.

Your domain name is whatever people will type in their Internet browser to get to your site (like abbyflynn.com).

It’s important to choose a name that is easy to remember and easy to spell. This can just be your name, the name of your company, or a super short phrase that sums up what you want to write about!

Make it memorable and keep it easy! If you have specific keywords that you’ll write about, it’s always a win to include those in your blogs name. You can purchase a domain name through a domain registrar like GoDaddy.

Or, if you’ve decided to go with a self-hosted WordPress site, you’ll need a hosting account for your website. My absolute favorite website host is Bluehost because it’s super easy to use and their customer service is always available.

Bluehost also always has deals, and you can get hosting for as little as $2.95 a month. You can buy your domain directly through them when you sign up!

3. Create a blog strategy that lines up with your purpose.

Okay, so you’re ready to join the ranks of Christian lifestyle bloggers! You know you want to share and blog about faith. But how do you actually get started?

Once you have your purpose and audience defined and you’ve decided on your website’s home, it’s time to create a content strategy! (Don’t worry, this part is a lot more fun than it sounds like.)

Now is the time to choose the topics or categories you’ll blog about, the style of your writing, and decide on how often you’ll post.

Choose your categories.

It’s time to pick your blogging topics! Consider what your audience is interested in and what questions they may have about living a Christian lifestyle.

You can also draw inspiration from your own experiences and share personal stories that relate to your message.

The categories you choose should have lots of potential to keep you blogging for a long time. If you’re blog is about Christian lifestyle, I recommend choosing 3-5 categories, but no more than that!

Here are my blog categories to give you an example:

  • Motherhood
  • Faith
  • Creative Life

Other great Christian lifestyle blog categories might be sharing your faith, fashion, beauty, music, relationships, ministry, fitness… the sky is really the limit!

Just stay true to yourself and the things that you’re actually interested in so that you’ll want to keep writing about those topics for a long time.

Decide on a schedule.

How often can you realistically post on your blog? When will you write your blog posts? This may change over time and you’ll be able to write faster as you get in the flow. A good amount of faith based bloggers start with maybe 2 a month, and then increase over time!

If you want to grow your blog and help new readers find it, Google loves when you’re consistent with your blogging schedule. The more often you blog, the more search engines will recognize your site as important.

When you’ve decided when you’ll blog, block the time on your calendar. Choose a spot in your house or at a coffee shop to write and hold yourself to that time! The absolute best way I’ve found to see your blog grow? Just stay consistent.

Share your blog with the world!

Once you’re blogging and you’ve got a content strategy in place, it’s time to start telling people about your blog! Send out a text to family and friends with a link. Shoot an email to a few of your co-workers to let them know.

Then when you’re feeling brave, do a post on Facebook and Instagram, share a video on Tik Tok. Wherever you love to show up online, introduce your blog and tell people why they should check it out!

Another big win is to have a place for people to join a newsletter through your blog somewhere on your homepage. That way they’ll never miss a post from you down the road.

It definitely takes time for your blog to grow and gain readership. But as you learn your brand voice, develop a blogging schedule and eventually learn about things like blog keywords down the road, you’ll be blogging like a pro and bringing in new readers in no time!

4. Write engaging and authentic content.

When it comes to creating content for your Christian lifestyle blog, it’s important to write in a way that’s both engaging and authentic.

Your readers want to connect with you on a personal level, so don’t be afraid to share your own experiences and insights! But it’s also important to provide valuable information and practical tips that your readers can apply to their own lives.

Make sure your content is accurate, and always aim to help your audience – whether that’s by encouraging them, entertaining them, or giving them new ideas.

For example, if you’re sharing a story about how you overcame a difficult season in your life, include actionable steps that your readers can take to apply those lessons to their own lives.

By providing both personal insights and practical advice, you can create content that is both engaging and helpful to your readers.

There’s no better way to build a loyal following and make a positive impact in the lives of others!

Conclusion

I’m so excited for you to join the ranks of faith based bloggers, and I hope you love the process just as much as I have!

Starting a Christian lifestyle blog can feel intimidating at first, but push through those little frustrations and difficulties at the beginning. It will be worth it!

Remember to stay true to your purpose and message, and always aim to provide value to your readers and you will do great!
