How to Write a Powerful Brand Message
So you’ve got this DREAM, right?
Maybe you’re growing a service-based business and you’re trying to attract the right clients. Maybe you’re finally trying out that idea you’ve been thinking about for years. Maybe you said “Peace out!” to your day job and are figuring out how to go solo in your creative field.
But there’s one thing that will help you make major moves and that you’ll struggle without.
I’m talking about your brand message.
Think about it for a second… what’s the first thing you do when coming upon a new business?
You probably scan through their social media feed.
You go to their website and quickly take in words like mission, value, and purpose.
All these things influence the way we feel when we see a brand – and they’re all part of the brand message.
Why Your Brand Message Matters
Okay, but what exactly is a brand message and WHY should I care?
Over the last few years working as a content writer, I’ve definitely realized how important words are when connecting with your audience. (You can hear more about this on my podcast episode, “How I started Working for Myself.”)
A lot of the clients I’ve worked with know they need to be sharing online, but they’re randomly throwing content out that has no real connection to their audience OR their goals… and hearing crickets back in return.
You’ve got to think of your brand message as the foundation and guide to what your brand is all about.
Your brand message is the story and reason behind why you do what you do. It defines how you speak to your audience and helps you spark a real connection. From there, connection equals sales.
When you’re clear about your mission, you give your brand value. If your who, what, and why are rich in purpose; the right people will be inspired and want to follow along.
How to Create a Brand Message that Matters
Are you in need of a clear brand message to help your brand or business thrive? I got you!
Here are 3 big things to think about as you refine your brand message that will give you the confidence you need to attract the right eyes and help you finally see the growth you’re looking for!
1. Determine your purpose.
Every brand has a purpose that you as the creator can feel. But what kind of messaging can you create to share that feeling with others? How can you tell a story that summarizes why you do what you do? How can you make your brand about your audience instead of yourself? When you write your brand message, you’re not only giving your audience a chance to understand why you started your brand, but you’re also welcoming them into the story. How do you help them? Give a frame for how you want them to experience what you offer, and infiltrate that purpose everywhere you show up online and in person.
2. Connect with your audience.
The best way to know what your audience wants from you? Get to know them! What other brands are they following? Where do they hang out online? What are they looking for and what do they need? When you form a message that connects someone to your brand, you begin building a relationship that leads to loyalty. As consumers, we all crave some sort of tie-in with those we follow. And with the right messaging and a focus on connection, we can turn entrepreneurship into community!
3. Engage behind the scenes.
You’ve talked to your people, learned what they need, and infiltrate that into the story of your brand. You are basically handing out VIP passes into the heart and soul you poured into your graphic design company or t-shirt brand. But your brand messaging doesn’t stop with marketing. Infiltrate it throughout your email list. Regularly survey your audience on what they need and what they’re loving. Never stop learning, refining, and testing what works and what doesn’t. Because a really great brand message will always keep getting better… just like you and what you do.
The most important part of building a powerful brand message is just getting started! So let’s get out there and start building some killer connections with our audience today.
