At some point, you’ve probably heard a friend or coworker talk about an amazing idea, product, or service they’re going to launch “someday.”

But there’s one big thing that holds a lot of people back – launching their website.

It’s not necessarily creating a website that stops most of us in our tracks. It’s the fact that even once we have a site built, we don’t know what to SAY.

Have you ever felt this way?

Have you sat in front of a blinking cursor, excited to finally launch your site, but feeling unsure of how to talk about what you offer or what you do?

I’ve been working as a copywriter over the last 5 years, and I’m going to help you write your website copy in 5 STEPS – without the stress, overwhelm, or blinking cursor.

From your home page to your Services, About Page, and more, the right website copy template can help you narrow in on your messaging and create clear, concise copy that speaks to your audience.

Best Website Copywriting Tips

Before we get started, here’s a few tips to keep in mind as you prepare to write your site.

1. WRITE LIKE YOU TALK.

Don’t get weird and start writing with lingo you would never actually say.

2. WRITE AND EDIT SEPARATELY.

Don’t try to edit your writing as you’re writing! This is one of the biggest mistakes I see people consistently make, and if you hate writing, this is probably why. Just get something on paper. Go back and fix it later.

3. USE FREE AI TOOLS TO HELP YOU.

You don’t have to have perfect grammar or write like Shakespeare to have really great website copy. Just write like you talk (#1) then use free tools online to help you clean up your writing. Some of my favorites are Jasper, Chat GPT, Grammarly and Hemingway.

4. GATHER EXAMPLES

There are great website copy examples all over the web. So check out some of your own favorite websites and other people in your industry to start getting an idea of what you would like to include and the vibe you want to give off.

These 4 tips will help you to get in the right mindset as you begin to plot out your website copy.

Step Two: Understand the purpose of your website

If you don’t know where you’re going, it’s going to be really hard to get there. This is true for every aspect of your life and business. The same is true with your website copy. So WHAT you want your website to do. Why does it exist? Who are you speaking to? What do you want them to do when they get there? The best website copywriting has strategic purpose behind it. When you take the time to get clarity FIRST it gets easier to write copy that helps you accomplish your goals. Don’t overthink this.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What is this website for? – Examples: Your consulting practice, selling products from your jewelry business, a website for your podcast, etc.
  2. Describe the ideal visitor for your website. – Who is the person who makes these purchasing decisions? Describe your ideal website visitor/client.
  3. Now you know that ideal website visitor. How are they feeling? What do they need? – List 3-4 descriptions here along with WHY they feel that way.
  4. What do you want your visitors to do? – List your top 3 goals for your site in order of importance.
  5. Where are you sending them? – Usually the goal of our website is getting our visitors to take a next step – also referred to as a call-to-action. So what should your visitors do next?

In the free website copy template, you’ll find a section with these questions that’s specifically focused on getting clarity around the purpose of your site.

Step Three: Develop a clear, consistent message

Every page of your website should exude the same clear and consistent messaging. Your audience should be able to understand what your website is about and what you offer within seconds of landing on your page and always feel like you’re pointing them toward the same goals.

Use your website copy template to determine keywords to use throughout your site that makes it discoverable and makes all your content flow together. You’ll find a space for keyword planning in your Website Copywriting Template.

Remember – contrary to popular belief – YOUR WEBSITE IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

Whether you’re an artist, a designer or a painting business, your site is about helping other people. Use your discoveries from Step One to infuse messaging about your audience and their needs in everything you write. You’ll be able to reach your own goals or objectives best when you are helping others!

Step Four: Don’t skip your call-to-action!

Every single page of your site, from the Homepage to your About page and your Blog should have a purpose and an intention behind it. This is what we call a call-to-action. Your call-to-action (CTA) encourages your audience to do something specific, like signing up for a newsletter, making a purchase, or reaching out to you about working together.

Your CTA should always be clear and easy to access around your site. I love using action-oriented language that creates a bit of urgency to motivate your audience to take action. For example, “Sign up now for exclusive access” or “Limited time offer – buy now!” If you aren’t telling your website visitors what to do, they’ll leave without you ever knowing they were there. And that’s NOT what you want.
