Bible verses for encouragement during hard times
Whether you’ve lost a job, had a death in the family or are struggling financially, here are some promises from God’s Word that can give you encouragement during hard times.
Psalm 34:17-18
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
This powerful verse from Psalm 34 is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, God is still with us. When we feel brokenhearted or crushed by something we’re walking through, we can always turn to Him for comfort. This verse offers us hope and reassurance that we’re not alone in our struggles. God is still faithful, even when we don’t know what He is up to, and He is always there to guide us through difficult times.
Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Do you ever feel fearful or anxious about what is going to happen next? This verse from Isaiah reminds us that we don’t have to live this way! God is with us and He will strengthen and uphold us regardless of what we walk through. When we look to Him and ask God for the strength we need to get through whatever comes next, He can provide us with the comfort and reassurance that we so desperately need.
Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Instead of going to friends or social media, this verse reminds us to turn to God in prayer during times of anxiety and worry. We can go to God with our requests and concerns and give Him thanks and praise for who He is and what He has already done. Through this, we can experience a peace that doesn’t make sense to our human minds. Worried? Stressed out? Before doing anything else, take your worries to God through prayer.
Psalm 23:4
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
You may be having the worst day, week, or year of your life. It may seem like all the light is gone and there are no possibilities for your future. Even when you have those overwhelming thoughts and feelings, you are not alone! God is with you and he is still your protection, your comfort and your peace. When it’s too dark to know where you should go next, He can be your shepherd, giving you guidance through his rod and staff. We can always trust His protection and find peace in his presence, even when we’re facing our greatest fears.
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Even when you don’t know what will happen next, God has a plan for your life! His plan for you is one of love and hope. Even in our most difficult times, we can trust that God is working all things together for good. Every detail is part of a bigger picture – part of His plan. This verse is a source of comfort and encouragement, reminding us that we have a brighter future ahead of us, no matter what challenges we face in the present.
Matthew 11:28-29
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Is work more than you can take? Are the bills piling up? Do you wish that you had community and support? When you feel overwhelmed or at the end of yourself, Jesus invites you to find rest in Him! He knows every detail of your life and He wants you to come to Him about it. When we surrender our burdens and seek His guidance, we can experience a profound sense of peace and renewal that we would have never found on our own.
Psalm 121:1-2
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
Remember who your Maker is! Whenever you feel helpless, this verse is such a great reminder to take our eyes off our circumstances and lift them up to the Lord. He is the ultimate source of our help and the Creator of all things. He knows what He’s doing and He can be trusted! Placing your faith in God brings strength and confidence.
2 Corinthians 12:9
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
Have you ever thought to yourself, “I just don’t have it in me?” In those moments of our weakness, God delights in becoming our strength. Where our own strength and wisdom ends is where God’s power can step in in such an incredible way. If you are at your lowest, life your head up! God’s power will shine through and uplift you, allowing you to overcome any adversity.
Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Maybe life isn’t turning out the way you thought it would or you are walking through a lonely or difficult season. I love this verse because it reminds us that when even when life doesn’t look like we think it should, God can STILL works all things together for good for those who love Him. Through faith, we can trust in His greater plan and find hope in the midst of the unexpected because we know that He is a good God who has a reason and purpose for everything.
1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
What do you do and where do you turn when you’re feeling anxiety or fear? For me, it’s very easy for me to flip open my social media apps and just try to tune out the world. Some of us turn to alcohol, gossip, food or unhealthy relationships to dull the pain.
But instead of coping with it on our own, the Bible tells us to cast our anxiety on God instead! He cares deeply for us and He can carry the weight of whatever we bring to Him. We can entrust all our concerns and burdens to Him, and in even in the midst of our mess, find comfort in His love and care.
Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
This verse is a command to Joshua in the New Testament when he was first given the charge to take over and lead God’s people. He felt unequipped and unprepared for the task He was given, but God told Him this.
Joshua 1:9 is a reminder of God’s constant presence in our lives and the power that His presence brings. We don’t have to succumb to fear or discouragement because the Lord is with us wherever we go and we are never really facing the hard things in life alone.
Psalm 30:5
“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
During times of sorrow and grief, this verse reminds us that joy will always come. Although we may experience sadness for a time, God’s favor and restoration are everlasting, bringing hope and rejoicing in due time. We can even find little reminders of God’s faithfulness and His goodness in our hard situations. Knowing that He has given us the breath in our lungs and another day to live means that He is not done with us yet!
Isaiah 40:31
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Are you feeling weary, burnt out, or like you just truly have nothing left to give? I love this verse because it offers such a beautiful promise. When we place our hope in the Lord, He renews our strength, allowing us to overcome fatigue and empowering us to continue on despite how we feel.
