The Ultimate Closet Cleanout That Will Change How You Get Dressed

To this day, one of my favorite movie scenes is Cher Horowitz in Clueless picking out her outfit from her massive, department store-sized closet. The little computer outfit-chooser, the rolling racks, the immaculate color coordination… As a 10 year old girl, I was obsessed. (I’m dating myself, I know.)

But my own closet reality has always been a different story. And maybe yours is too?

If you’ve tried multiple times to clean it out but keep ending up with the same disorganization, pieces that don’t fit, and items you wore once two years ago, you’re in the majority. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Why Your Closet Cleanout Keeps Failing (And How to Finally Fix It)

Maybe you walk in your closet and instantly feel overwhelmed. Maybe you’ve tried to clean it out before but keep ending up with the same disorganization, pieces that don’t fit, and items you wore once two years ago.

Here’s why: most closet cleanouts fail because we jump straight to decluttering without a clear vision of what we actually want. When you don’t know what you’re building toward, everything feels worth keeping “just in case” and you land right back where you started. That all changes today.

As a mom who had to get her life organized while still wanting to look and feel her best, I’ve learned that a great closet isn’t about having more. It’s about having the right things. When your closet is filled with pieces you actually love, your confidence skyrockets. And it doesn’t take a lot of money to get there.

Ready to finally make it happen? This closet cleanout guide has you COVERED.

Pull out your calendar, pick 3 one-to-two hour time blocks over the next few days, and let’s get started.

How to do The Ultimate Closet Cleanout

I like to do this process over a weekend if you’re able and that works with your schedule! (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

If not, any 3 days in a row, or even 1 day a week can still work great.

What you need: A simple notepad & pen, trash bags, and a few boxes or plastic tubs like these. (You can also grab our FREE Closet Cleanout Workbook!)

Step 1: Get Inspired by the Wardrobe You Actually Want

Before we dive into the mess, it’s time to get clear on what you actually want. How do you want to dress? What pieces do you want to own? Whats the vibe and how do you want your closet to make you feel when you wake up in the morning? I know this is a little woo woo, but go with me.

You need a vision for where you want to go so you can actually get there.

Here’s how to find it:

  1. Choose your inspiration source. Pinterest and Instagram are my personal favorites. You can also head to your local library or flip through magazines at a bookstore and snap photos of outfits you love.
  2. Find the patterns. Grab a notebook and create two columns. Label one “Look & Feel” and the other “Pieces.”
  3. Look & Feel column: What vibes and aesthetics keep showing up in your inspiration? Think stripes, boho, lots of black, lace, oversized pieces, etc.
  4. Pieces column: What specific clothing items keep appearing? Lots of dresses? Cowboy boots? Wide leg denim? Leather jackets? Write down anything you keep gravitating toward.

Step 2: Find the Pieces That Are Already Working for You

Okay before we get to cleaning out your closet, let’s find the pieces that are already working for you.

If you’re able, make a separate space in your closet for these winners. (Don’t have closet space? You can also grab a super cheap clothing rack like this one to use as we work through the process.)

This rack is for your favorite pair of trousers, that staple denim jacket you won’t travel without, or those sneakers you got for your birthday that you’re obsessed with. If it fits well and you enjoy wearing it, it’s time to give these pieces a rightful place in your new wardrobe.

Step 3: Let Go of What No Longer Serves You

This is the part most people dread, but I promise it can actually be fun with the right mindset. Today you’re diving in to find the things you know need to go but just haven’t gotten around to. You’ll need a few trash bags, your inspiration list from Step 1, and a good attitude.

Make letting go less painful with these three tricks:

  1. Set a timer. Give yourself 2 hours max. Knowing there’s an endpoint makes it so much easier to start.
  2. Promise yourself a reward. “When I finish this I’ll go get a milkshake.” Whatever feels like a treat and out of the ordinary.
  3. Bring the vibes. Blast a playlist you love or invite a friend over, pop some champagne, and make it a party.

Work through every area where you store clothes, including your closet, dresser, and under the bed. For each item, ask yourself these questions.

5 Closet Cleanout Questions to Ask

  1. Does this still fit?
  2. Have I worn this in the last year?
  3. Is it free of rips, holes, and stains?
  4. Does it have sentimental value?
  5. Does it match the style inspiration I collected in Step 1?

The rule: if you can’t answer yes to at least three, donate it. Rips, stains, or holes with no sentimental value? Trash. Sentimental but unworn? Box it up and put it in storage.

What to do with donations: drop them at a local thrift store, sell name brand pieces on ThredUp, or host a clothes swap with friends!

Step 4: Take a Fresh Look at What’s Left

You should have at least a few pieces remaining that still fit, are free of problems, and that you have worn semi-recently.

Now it’s time to decide, are these pieces worth keeping around? Quickly ask of each piece: Do you wear it regularly? Is this a critical piece to your current wardrobe? Do you feel confident/comfortable in this piece? Does it fit the vibe and feel of your style inspiration?

If you can’t answer ‘Yes’ to at least 2 of these, add it to your donation pile.

Everything you’re keeping, add it back to your closet.

Step 5: Figure Out What Your Wardrobe Is Missing

Look at your key pieces rack. Look at your closet. Then look back at your inspiration. What’s missing?

Maybe your inspo is full of oversized sweaters and wide leg jeans but you don’t own either. That’s your shopping list.

A few rules for shopping your gaps:

  1. Don’t try to do it all at once. This list is a goal, not a shopping cart. Aim for one piece a month or one piece a season based on your budget.
  2. Start at the thrift store. There’s something about the thrill of the hunt that makes finding a piece so much more rewarding.
  3. Use discount retailers for basics. Great basics don’t have to cost a lot.
  4. Splurge on the forever pieces. If it’s something you’ll wear for years (your dream pair of jeans, a great leather jacket), it’s worth investing in.

The goal isn’t a perfect wardrobe overnight. It’s to gradually be able to recreate outfits from your inspiration and put your own spin on them with what you have.

Step 6: Build Your Go-To Staple Outfits

This is what makes life so much easier. What if you had 5-10 outfits that use clothes you already have in your closet that make you feel cool and confident every time you put them on?

That my friend is the goal.

Once you’ve been able to fill some of your outfit gaps, make an easy to access list of your favorite outfits (on your phone or in our free Closet Workbook works great!)

These can be the outfits you always pair together, or outfits from your inspiration that you’re able to recreate with what you have.

The goal is to eventually get to 10 that can be adapted to work whenever you get that “I don’t know what to wear” feeling.

Step 7: Organize Your Closet So It Stays That Way

If you really want to make your closet into something you love, consider looking into some closet organization tools! Whether you have a whole walk in to yourself or one bar at the bottom of tiny closet, these tools can work for you.

  1. Uniform Hangers – Having all your clothes on the same hanger can work wonders and make your closet look so much more put-together and intentional. Velvet hangers are my personal favorite because clothes actually stay on them! Wood hangers are also great and look so bougie. (50 set Velvet Hangers | 20-pack Wood Hangers)
  2. Shelf Dividers – For jeans and heavier items like sweatshirts and sweaters, these will keep your shelves uniform and tidy. No more leaning towers of denim. (8-pack Acrylic Shelf Dividers)
  3. Bins – Perfect for accessories, scarves, belts, or anything that doesn’t hang or fold neatly. Label them so you’re not digging around every morning. Clear bins are a great option so you can see exactly what’s inside at a glance. (5-pack Stackable Storage Baskets | 3-pack Stackable Storage Shelves)
  4. Drawer Organizers – A game changer for things like socks, underwear, and tanks. Once your drawers are organized, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. Try folding items vertically so you can see everything at once instead of digging to the bottom of a pile. (12-pack Drawer Dividers | 12-pack Fabric Dresser Bins)
  5. Over-the-Door Organizers – Don’t overlook the back of your closet door! A quality door organizer can be perfect for the hoes, bags, or jewelry that you reach for everyday. (Over the Door Shoe Organizer | Gold Over the Door Hooks)
  6. A Small Mirror – If space allows, adding a mirror inside or near your closet makes the getting-dressed process so much smoother and honestly just makes the whole space feel more intentional. Full Length Mirror With Rack & Storage | Gold Domed Full Length Mirror

You Did It! Now Keep It That Way.

This closet clean out isn’t just about getting rid of stuff. It’s about making intentional space for the version of yourself you actually want to show up as every day.

The first time you walk in and everything has a place, fits well, and feels like you, that feeling is worth every trash bag and tough decision it took to get there.

Remember: this doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to happen overnight. Come back to this guide whenever things start to feel cluttered again. Your closet, like your style, is always a work in progress.
