How to improve your writing skills
1. Read. A lot.
Does reading make you a better writer? Yes, it really does! This may sound counterproductive to you because why read when you should be writing? But to become a better writer you must read. The thing is, humans are like sponges. We soak in everything, so when we read – we soak in the language, styles, words, etc.
So, I highly recommend you read a lot. I read consistently. I love to read fashion magazines with articles, because they help expand my language and inspire creative ways to write. I also love to read the New York Times, random fiction, and classic books. I read the Bible daily – which helps with Christian inspiration writing. Even if you don’t love to read, listen to audio books. You will find that the language seeds into you and you will become a better writer.

2. Separate writing time from your editing time.
It’s common for people become too overwhelmed with writing and editing at the same time. Then, once you fill yourself with enough dread over the long drawn out process, you never write anything at all! Here’s a tip: Just pull out a pen (or your computer) and write everything you know. Set a timer aside for 5-10 minutes and allow yourself to ONLY write. Don’t worry about the grammar, paragraphs, or words. Write until you have everything down, then take a break.
Come back later with a refreshed mind and only spend time editing what you wrote earlier. Half of the work is already done, all you need to do is clean it up when you edit. This allows your brain to stay in a flow without going back and forth between creative and technical thinking. Eventually you’ll realize the day you started separating writing from editing is the day you became a better writer.
3. Use free AI writing tools!
The great news about the times we live in is that you don’t have to have perfect grammar to be an amazing writer. There are so many free editing tools that can help correct your grammar, suggest new phrasing, and even create writing drafts for you! And the best part is, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to use them! A few of my favorites are:
Hemingway
Hemingwayapp.com
Perfect for simplifying and bringing down the reading level. Average reading level in America is grade level 4. So using this tool to simplify your writing will help readers understand your writing more.
Grammarly
Grammarly.com
Grammarly is a free tool that helps you correct your grammar immediately. It also comes with a plugin, so you can add it to your browsers, Gmail accounts, etc. Such an easy tool to use! They offer a paid and free version, but over the last few years, I’ve found the free version more than adequate for general writing needs.
Chat.Gpt
chat.openai.com/
This platform is literally growing and expanding and changing everyday and the potential of what it can do is pretty incredible. I’ll often use it so say things like “Give me 10 ideas for blog posts” and this platform delivers – every single time. While the writing content you get here is not usually ready to go as is, it makes an excellent jumping off point for editing adding personality and spice and making the information all your own. They currently offer a paid and free version.
