I’ve probably said this at least 5-6 times in my adult life. And after the first couple times, my husband probably started secretly rolling his eyes. (Ok but not really. He’s a nice guy!)
But the reality is, most of us tend to give up on our goals, dreams and creative pursuits before we really dig in and get to the good parts.

Why you need a blog planner
I’ll admit I’m obsessed with planners, and I’ve tried pretty much every brand available at Amazon, Target and under the sun.
For my personal and work life, I use the Golden Coil Planner.
But I knew that since my blog was a new endeavor, I wanted a product that would keep me focused and keep this writing separate from my other writing work. I recommend a blog planner to you for the same reason.

If you want to create a money-making blog or you want your blog to become a business, you need to give it it’s own time and space in your schedule.
I found that when I put my weekly blog tasks alongside my client work and family schedules, everything else always seemed to take precedence.

But as a new blogger, I found that having all those options and pages just left me feeling overwhelmed. The more I tried to keep up with filling and figuring everything out, the less time I spent well… actually blogging.

Here are a few other important planning tips for new bloggers that will help you keep going.
1. Define your niche and target audience.
Before you get serious about your blog, you need to know. what you’re blogging about and WHO you’re talking to. Once you’ve decided. on these two things – STICK WITH IT. You want Google to be able. to quickly understand what your blog is all about and who exactly it’s for. So make your niche clear and plain through your categories, and focus on the things your target audience cares about most.
2. Get serious about research.
I know this doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun, but TRUST ME! This was the biggest part of me finally starting to make money with my blog. You have to spend just as much time on research as you do on writing! Research popular topics and trends within your niche to create relevant content.
Keyword research is a MAJOR part of blog planning that is usually the missing piece between a successful and not successful blog.

3. Brainstorm and outline every blog post.
I know we all want to be Carrie Bradshaw, sitting in front of a window and just having a sudden strike of writing inspiration. (Did that reference date me?)
But the truth is waiting for inspiration to strike means that we will burn out on writing before we ever get started. So even on the days when you’re not feeling inspired to write, at least take the research you’ve learned and make time to brainstorm and outline your next blog post.
This will save you so much time in the long run and make it easier to produce more content more often as you develop a process that works for you.
This can be as easy as opening a Google Doc or pulling out a sheet of paper.
How to write a blog outline:
- Write a rough blog title at the top.
- Write a short, messy intro paragraph so you remember what you’re blogging about.
- Take the keywords you found and list them out in 3-5 headings for your blog.
- Write a short conclusion paragraph.
That’s it! Now you’re all ready to go for when it’s time to sit down and really write!
4. Choose a consistent posting schedule.
This is another area where having a blog content planner will help in a major way. Make sure you have a planner with a monthly calendar view that lets you plot out what you want to post when, what you’ll share when and when you’ll take breaks (which are so important!) The key is to be realistic and be consistent.
There is no point in posting 10 blogs in one month if you wont have the capacity to do that over the next 2-3 months. So be honest with yourself. Are 4 blog posts doable every month? Then stick with that! While frequency is important for growth, it means nothing without consistency.
5. Set realistic goals and track your progress.
You need to have something that you’re working towards or you’ll eventually stop working! So I know it can feel scary, but go ahead and make some goals for yourself! Keep track of how far you’ve gotten and what you still need to do. The blog content planner I use has a spot for monthly goals, which is a great place to keep track of this.
Leave room for flexibility and adaptability. Blogging is a dynamic process, so be open to experimentation and learning.
